What Are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge consists of several porcelain crowns strung together to create a restoration. A crown is placed on the teeth at either end of the gap in your smile, with one to three artificial teeth, called pontics, placed in between them. To ensure added security, we can place a dental implant on either end of the space in your grin and anchor the crowns onto those. Although bridges can be made of a wide variety of materials, we typically craft ours with dental porcelain due to its uncanny ability to mimic natural tooth enamel while also withstanding the daily wear and tear of chewing.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Dental Bridge?

Virtually anyone who’s missing one to three teeth in a row would make an excellent candidate for a dental bridge. They present a great alternative to patients who are unable or unwilling to undergo the oral surgery required to place implants. Before placing a bridge, however, we ask that your gums, as well as the teeth onto which we’ll be placing the crowns, are in good condition. For this reason, you may need to undergo fillings or gum disease therapy prior to receiving your bridge.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges offer a quick, easy, and cost-effective solution to replacing several consecutive missing teeth at once. They provide a wonderful restorative option when you have suffered from bone loss, as you won’t have to undergo bone grafting surgery like you would with dental implants.

Once placed, bridges improve your ability to speak clearly and chew a variety of healthy, crunchy foods. They support your facial muscles, keeping you looking young for years to come. In addition, they prevent your remaining teeth from drifting into the space created by the gap. Failure to replace missing teeth can often result in bite changes, which puts you at an increased risk of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems. With a dental bridge, you can restore both the appearance and the health of your smile!

The Dental Bridge Procedure

During your first of two appointments, either Dr. Plummer or Dr. Pham will prepare your teeth to receive the crowns by removing a very thin layer of enamel. We then take impressions of that area of your mouth to create a mold, which is used to craft your custom bridge to fit the exact dimensions of your bite. While your restoration is being crafted, we can affix you with a temporary bridge.

You’ll return a few weeks later and we’ll swap out your temporary with your permanent bridge. We’ll also provide you with instructions on how to care for it. With proper oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, your bridge can last up to a decade or even longer!
